Infant Massage
Infant massage is the practice of regular massage for the new baby. The sense of touch is a baby’s first link with his or her environment. A baby first seeks contact in breastfeeding and finds satisfaction and pleasure in the soothing touch of the mother and father. Skin is the largest organ of the body, with nerve endings affecting many of the body’s health functions. Infant massage can be started at any time, using nurturing touch to communicate with the baby. When the baby is in a quiet, alert state, he or she is receptive to massage.
The mother or father gently begins by assessing the infant’s readiness and then proceeding, based on the baby’s response. Massage is always gently offered, and the baby’s acceptance or reluctance should be respected. This gives the baby a sense of control and helps him or her learn how to have needs met. Babies are very good at communicating when we learn to listen and watch for cues.
Many cultures have practiced infant massage as part of their daily infant care. Touch and massage continues for all family members, children and adults. There is documentation that babies who experience regular touch have less aggression and violence. What a benefit for society!
Infant massage is done differently from the massage practiced on adults. The course is taught in four weekly sessions to allow for practice. New sessions begin the first Saturday of every month. Parents learn the strokes and practice with their own baby under the watchful eye of the instructor. Class time is about one hour, with lots of time for exchange of information on touch and a little basic parenting thrown in. Discussion and interaction make a close-knit circle and a very rewarding time for all participants. The course cost is $40. If your baby is at least 6 weeks old but not yet crawling, he or she is the perfect age!
