Department of Acute Care Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Trauma Research Program

In December 2007, the Texas Department of State Health Services recognized the American College of Surgeons accreditation and designated The Department of Acute Care Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Memorial a Level II Trauma Center. As part of the designation, the Trauma Department committed to further strengthening the department by developing a trauma research program.

The goals of the research program include using the reliable data collected in the trauma registry to identify performance improvement issues within the trauma patient care service; assessing the impact of procedural changes made to the trauma service; and investigating specific patient morbidities.

The trauma department hopes the research efforts will aid in their goal of becoming a Level I trauma center in the future.

Several of the many topics currently being researched in the department include:

  • Use of telemedicine in a Level II trauma facility
  • Impact of bedside chart review on trauma registry closure and complication identification rates
  • EMS feedback and its impact on patient care
  • PICC line vs. central line complications
  • FAST scan vs. CT scan
  • Traumatic brain injury and hypothermia
  • Evaluation of intubations in the ED
  • Evaluation of the impact of Attending of the Week.

Below, you can see the results of some of the preliminary studies already completed.
