CHRISTUS Spohn Mobile Clinic
The growing numbers of teen pregnancies in rural South Texas caught the attention of health care professionals in the early 1990s. Many of the expectant mothers did not know how important prenatal care was and typically delivered their babies at home or in an emergency department, where they were seen by a physician for the first time during their pregnancy. As a result, many of their babies were born with problems requiring a lifetime of medical care.
In response to an obvious need, the CHRISTUS Spohn Mobile Clinic took to the road in 1993 to deliver prenatal health care and education to pregnant teens who didn't have access to transportation or couldn't afford medical care. Over the years, the "medical office on wheels" has become a highly successful outreach program, embraced by the women in the rural communities it serves.
Each week, the CHRISTUS Spohn Mobile Clinic offers education and medical services (special emphasis on gynecological and prenatal care) to underserved areas in South Texas. The staff assists patients in applying for WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and Medicaid program benefits so that patients can easily access care by a physician when needed.
