Gerald Kizerian, Ph.D. Director of Behavioral Medicine
Medical School/Graduate schools: MSW-University of Utah, Graduate School of Social Work, Ph.D.Brigham Young University Undergraduate School / Degree: BS in Soc. and psych. from Weber State University Things I Enjoy Teaching: Teaching residents about themselves as well as how to avoid being controlled by their patients while assisting that patient to help him/her self are my most enjoyable teaching moments. I also gain much satisfaction witnessing the personal and professional growth in the three years the resident is with us. Special Areas of Intrest in FM: Hypnosis and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Personal Quote: "Without faith there cannot be any hope." What I like best about CCFM: I started out not an advocate of medicine. That was in the '80s. My first experience with residents was a lecture presentation to help residents deal more effectively with difficult patients. Being a bit devious, I decided to role-play a difficult patient and doctor situation; my being the difficult patient. My initial thought and plan was to really stump the resident. That was my cruel and malicious side. To my surprise, I was so taken by the effective and compassionate way the resident "handled" me that I found new perceptions of medicine that have remained to the present. Shortly after that experience I was asked to be the Behavioral Science faculty. That was in 1990. I've been here ever since, never regretting that decision to join the medical world.
